To empower children in underserved communities by fostering early literacy, nurturing social and emotional growth, and walking alongside educators and families to build brighter futures.
Whether mentoring a single child or training a group of teachers, our work is rooted in sustained relationships. Through consistency, care, and creativity, we support children and the adults who guide them—because true change happens one human connection at a time.
Washtenaw Promise was founded with a simple, powerful belief: every child deserves a chance to thrive, no matter their zip code. In 2017, longtime educator Tim Wilson and attorney Bob Ufer brought together their shared passion for equity in education to launch an organization rooted in early childhood literacy and relationship-building. What began as a handful of volunteers reading with preschoolers in Ypsilanti classrooms quickly evolved into a growing network of community mentors, educators, and advocates united by a common purpose.
Over time, Washtenaw Promise has expanded beyond literacy support to include educator wellness, professional development, and outdoor learning experiences—all while remaining deeply grounded in the local community. From partnerships with local universities and nonprofits to the creation of a 117-acre education and retreat center, the organization has steadily grown into a multifaceted force for good, always guided by the relationships that started it all.
